The Impossibility of Torture and Democracy - Public Lecture
Since the events of 11 September 2001, liberal democracies around the world, including Australia , have introduced unprecedented domestic counter-terrorism measures that have fundamentally changed the democratic state. Traditional aspects long considered essential in a liberal democracy – the rule of law, equality before the law, freedom of political association and freedom of speech - have been severely compromised if not irrevocably damaged by measures intended to protect the state from terrorist threats. UWA is hosting a public lecture on this topic by  Professor Jenny Hocking of Monash University.

When:
Monday 5 November 2007 at 6pm
Where: Geography Lecture Theatre 1, UWA

ALL WELCOME. NO RSVP REQUIRED

The institute of Advanced Studies will host a Postgraduate Seminar with Jenny Hocking on Tuesday 6 November 2007 - Lessons from John Howard's domestic war on terror: How counter-terrorism is undermining Australian democracy .   All interested students from Perth Universities are invited to attend, as well as academics and those working in relevant areas.

Stand Up, Speak Out update

Perth STAND UP, SPEAK OUT 07:
The main event organised on the 17th October, the International Day for Poverty Eradication, was held at the Perth Foreshore, between
5.30 PM and 6.30 PM . The concept for the event was simple, a public gathering of like-minded individuals from all walks of life, brought together by a singular cause. It was an opportunity to bring awareness about the greater cause and also recognise the efforts of all participants.

Contemplative, meditative music set the proceedings of the evening, to centre people's awareness on the reason behind the gathering, and the need to STAND UP, SPEAK OUT. Subsequently, the Millennium Development Goals were elucidated and presented by 8 speakers. After this, a celebratory ceremony called "Lighting of the Incense" was undertaken nearby the sand banks of the Swan River , as a symbolic gesture of every participant's commitment.

The incense ceremony was followed by the reading and taking of the UNMC pledge, followed by 2 minutes of celebratory silence. The silence was then broken by Ben Harper's song A Better way. This brought the event to a close.

International response:
Over 43.7 million people, in 127 countries have broken the Guinness World Record - set last year at 23.5 million - for the largest number of people to :"STAND UP AGAINST POVERTY" in 24 hours.  The event took place over 16th and 17th October and saw millions of people standing up around the world to demand urgent action against poverty, inequality and in support of the Millenium Development Goals.

JET Childcare Rally update
On Sunday October 14, the JET Action Group stood up infront of a 120 strong crowd and fought
for the rights of single parents who are studying to try and improve their lives.
Single parents
and students, Peta Miller and Rebekah Ozanne told how the removal of the JET Child Care Fee

Assistance has impacted on their lives
.

Rebekah, who is studying for a Bachelor of Education, said, "I study hard and make good grades.
However, my son and I survive on a Centrelink income, which leaves us living only $33 above

the Henderson Poverty Line. I am hoping to finish next year, but wonder how I am going to cope

with a $4000 bill for childcare whilst I complete my School Internship".

Peta, who worked hard to upgrade her skills to get into uni, told the crowd, "I was assured by
Centrelink at the beginning of this year that I was eligible for JET and when I received a first

round offer to Murdoch I felt really proud and optimistic about the future. However, five weeks

into my studies I received a massive blow - a letter from Centrelink saying they had made a

mistake and that  I wasn't in fact eligible for JET because my course exceed 12 months in

duration. I have had to pay $110 a week for my 2 year old son's childcare for the whole

semester on my credit card - a debt I am still struggling to pay back".

JET Child Care Fee Assistance had initially subsidised up to 90c in the dollar of fees charged by
Child Care Centres, ensuring that most sessions were an affordable $5, these fees have now

increased to anywhere from $50- $80 a session - an amount few students and certainly NO

single mums can afford.

If you have been affected by the new and discriminatory JET legislation please visit

http://groups.google.com/group/jetactiongroup and find out what you can do to help continue
the fight for your rights.

National CLOSE THE GAP Day
When it comes to Indigenous health the facts are clear: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can expect to live 17-years less than other Australians, Indigenous child mortality is triple the rate of other Australian children, and Indigenous Australians experience much higher rates of chronic disease than other Australians. But we don’t have to accept these facts because change is possible.
Huge gains have been made in life expectancy for Indigenous people in New Zealand, Canada and the USA over the last ten years, with the life expectancy gap falling to six to seven years. However, Australia has failed to make similar progress on Indigenous health, which is currently the worst in the developed world.

On United Nations International Day for Indigenous people, paediatrician and former Australian of the Year, Professor Fiona Stanley scrawled her name in large red letters to a petition signed by Missy Higgins, John Butler, Kathy Freeman, Ian Thorpe and more than 75,000 other Australians. The pledge is part of the CLOSE THE GAP campaign – which involves over 40 Aboriginal, medical and human rights and development agencies – and is calling on governments to close the 17 year life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within 25 years.

You can be part of the solution by participating in National Close the Gap Day on Tuesday 18th September 2007. Long-term action on Indigenous health and social disadvantage will happen if enough of us stand up and say to our political leaders: “forget the politics and the quick fixes! Commit to long-term solutions by working with Indigenous communities to provide the essential services that most Australians take for granted – primary healthcare, housing and employment.”

It’s easy to be part of National Close the Gap Day . You can:
Organise your own event at your work, home, school or community group
Send an e-card to your local politician and friends

• Attend an event in your local area

Here in Perth, the primary action for National CLOSE THE GAP day will be held at Parliament house at 11.30, and will include a traditional smoking ceremony, and Aboriginal music and dance. Politicians will be asked to participate in the ceremony and sign a giant petition to show their support for the campaign and make a commitment to ending the Indigenous health crises.

PCs for Refugees

PC's for Refugees is a program run through Engineers Without Borders.   The program aims to provide basic computer knowledge to refugees or migrants and it also provides recycled computers when the students don't already have a computer of their own.

At the moment there are a number of tutors and we also have a couple of computer technicians who volunteer their IT smarts when something goes wrong.   As a volunteer we visit our student's home each week and run through basics on the computer, such as word processing, using spreadsheets, etc.   Eventually when the student has gained some basic knowledge, the program provides them with an internet connection which is paid for by us for a year, and we start teaching email and internet skills.

"As a tutor, I believe this program is valuable as we live in such a technology run world. For example, we all know how much we use computers as part of our university studies - the uni sends a lot of important information via email, we need to do internet-based research, and all our assignments are expected to be word processed. Since tutoring as part of this program I have realised how all of these technology based tasks we do so quickly and simply on a daily basis are really overwhelming for someone that may have never used a computer before, especially someone who is also learning english as a second language", says volunteer Rachel Riley.

At the moment more female tutors are needed urgently. Although it is run as part of Engineers Without Borders it is not necessary for you to be in any way connected with engineering. And as we're teaching really basic skills there's no need to be a computer wiz or to have any IT training (that's what the computer technicians are for).

To find out more about what it's like to be a tutor, you can contact Rachel at 30271497@student.murdoch.edu.au .

To apply straight away, contact the program director, Barry Robson on pakbazza@iinet.net.au . Barry is retiring soon, so anyone interested in being program director could also email him.

The War on Democracy

War on Democracy
The War on Democracy  is Australian writer-filmmaker John Pilger's first major feature film for the cinema, an extraordinary and illuminating documentary with Latin America  at its heart. It explores people's yearning for democracy - government, for, by and of the people - and demonstrates the brutal reality of America's foreign policy of 'spreading democracy'. It also reveals the remarkable rise of true popular democracy and people power among the poorest on earth, the people of  Latin America , whose grassroots movements are often ignored in the West.

Pilger  conducts an exclusive interview with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and films the people of the barrios and the social movements of Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile, and those who suffered under dictatorships tolerated and encouraged by the US and the West. His interviews with ex US government officials and the head of the CIA in Latin America  reveal that what happened in Latin America in the 1980s is a metaphor for how the rest of the world is being 'ordered' today, with the Middle East as its epicentre.

Above all, The War On Democracy is an inspiring and thought-provoking film, for it sees the world not through the eyes of the powerful, but through the hopes and dreams and extraordinary actions of ordinary people.

Opens nationally September 27.  Showing at:
Luna Leederville - 155 Oxford Street, Leederville

India protected as 'Pharmacy of the Developing World'

Novartis have lost a legal challenge against India's patent law, claiming that a provision in the Indian Patent's Act that makes it more difficult to obtain a patent on modifications to existing drugs was not compliant with WTO rules.   The court rejected all of Novartis's claims. If the Swiss pharmaceutical company had won, generic competition in India would be restricted as drug patents would have been granted far more widely.

Following the court's decision, MSF handed over a petition containing more than 420,000 signatures calling for Novartis not to challenge the decision due to the devastating impact this could have on access to essential medicines.   A World Health Organization report, published in 2006, found that more extensive patent protection does not lead to increased development of the drugs desperately needed in developing countries.   Developing countries and international agencies, like UNICEF and MSF, rely heavily on importing affordable drugs from India.

"We would like to express sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the global mobilization against Novartis's legal challenge in India", said Dr. Christophe Fournier, International President of MSF. "Hundreds of thousands of people on six continents made this happen and were a part of helping maintain India's role as pharmacy of the developing world".
