Murdoch University Students Tutoring Students Program

Students Without Borders coordinates the Students Tutoring Students program at Murdoch University, which includes the Rockingham and Peel campuses and external students where this program can be achieved online.

Tutors are students who have achieved a minimum Distinction in a recently completed unit of study. Students can be tutored by these Distinction student tutors in the unit of study on campus. We have 100 student tutors covering many units of study at Murdoch. The program is very highly successful with fantastic feedback.

Your contribution may be acknowledged on your University Academic Transcript and in various other ways.

Tutoring Students Who Can't Afford Tuition

We tutor students who can't afford paid tutors, agencies and the like. There are many students in low income families, in struggling single parent families, in impoverished social demographics who appear trapped in their cycle of poverty.  We tutor students in their homes or arrange for them to come to us. We've seen the difference in their lives, and the whole family.

I tutored a 15 year old in Wilson whose parents are low income earners, whose other child tried to commit suicide, and this had effect on the 15 year old I was tutoring. He was doing poorly at school. His improved performance rippled a positive effect throughout the whole family.

An Orelia 16 year old, single parent mum working irregular hours as a locum nurse, had all but given up. Was medicated as ADHD. With the tuition, with the improved academic performance, with the new foci, this improved the quality of life in the home, improved the relationships.

A 14 year old Balga student, one of three young children to a single mother, in a house barely furnished, improved his academic performance, started passing, found foci and altered behaviour in the household.

If you can spare the time and have sound knowledge in mathematics, the sciences, humanities and can therefore tutor at primary and secondary level then please contact the SWB co-ordinator.  Your contributions may be acknowledged on your University Academic Transcript and through other various acknowledgments.

Please note that a Working With Children Check is required if the student is under 18.

Teaching Conversational English

Teach conversation English on campus to students and community members who would benefit. Teach Conversational English overseas to elementary school students. You must be a native speaker. You may find yourself teaching for several weeks to students in places such as China, South East Asia, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, etc...

During 2005, 26 Murdoch students taught conversational English only to elementary school students in China, on two university campuses 80 kilometres south of Shanghai. They taught conversational English  only for two and three weeks only out of a four week stay that included accommodation, food and sightseeing costs paid by the hosts.

I ensured that Murdoch students came from Peel and Rockingham campuses, from external students, mature age students, international students, and from a good spread of streams of study. The feedback is that these are always tremendous and positive experiences.
